Non-ironic answer. Fishing nets are usually used by, you guessed it, fishers. So that is something that does not apply to many people, nor countries even sometimes. If you are in the middle of an urban area of the US, UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Canada etc etc you cannot reduce your consumption of fishing nets. So instead if they want to reduce consumption of plastic they do it with the things that they actually can, like plastic bags, straws, cups etc I am not here to speak about the utility/morality/efficiency of that per se. But at least I recognize that the kid with the cap is doing something to reduce the garbage created by him, which is at least a tiny step forward than simply doing nothing.

Because we can't do a good thing if we don't do a better one? Also, the straw thing is something anyone can contribute to by consuming less plastic in general, how many average people are tossing nets into the ocean? Reducing plastic use is good.

We produce too much trash. Of all kinds. Yes, some things have worst visible effects than others (fishing nets are terrible, but plastic particles spread everywere). No effort is small, and not because something is important, other problems magically disappear.

No i dont eat meat, and it does help. The less of a product you buy the less it will be manufactured. If more people stopped eating fish, there would be less pollution in the oceans. Ecologism is one of the more logical reasons for being vegetarian/vegan.

I honestly doubt that "half" the plastic in the ocean comes from fishing nets instead of tons and tons of trash.

also its because of overly breeding shit countries like philipines, most of africa, india and china is why we get a lot of plastic because they dont care about cleaning their rivers because they are too busy being retarded and breeding.

Just because one study says it doesn't make it so. The accepted split is 20% fishing gear, 80% everything else. When you go to a patch of plastic the size of Texas and sample, you get 1) sampling error 2) the plastic patch is not representative of all other plastics in the ocean. Common sense says 46% is an outlier study.

Yeah I agree regular people probably can't reduce the use of fishing nets. But the whole straws thing pisses me of so much. Straws make up fuck all of the ocean plastic. Yeah, it's still good to protest something. But straws? Spending your time protesting straws means your not protesting the million things that are higher up the list. And people think banning straws is some huge achievement against plastic waste... It just makes activists look powerless. Band together, use your heads, solve a real issue and give me back my fucking plastic straws so I don't have to drink out of mushy paper!
